Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary

Wood Anemone

This 16.86 acre parcel was donated in 2007, by The Mount Vernon Corporation. It is located near Wedgewood Drive. We would like to thank Mr. Putnam and his family for their generous donation.

Wedgewood property is a prime example of a wetland environment. During the spring and summer any number of wildflowers can be found blooming. Jack-in-the-pulpit, Bloodroot, Trillium, Marsh Marigold, and Jumpseed are some examples. At any time you can explore the large variety of trees and shrubs along the trails; there are over twenty species of trees identified with many specimens of impressive size. Wildlife ranges from deer, fox, and turkey to Box Turtles and Wood Frogs if you are lucky enough to see them.

Two great days spent cleaning up our trails at Wedgewood! 🍃 A huge thanks to our member Kendall who brought us some wood chips to spruce up the trailhead. We cleared the trails, fixed some markers, and saw some cool mushrooms, salamanders, and feathers along the way. 🪶

Thank you for your Support

Previously, we informed you that the Town of Southington rerouted a stormwater drain onto our protected wetland at Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary without a permit, our knowledge, or permission. This action caused damage to the trail system and the wetland. Despite our initial efforts, the Town was uncooperative, prompting us to file a formal complaint with the Inland Wetlands Commission. This matter was scheduled to be addressed at the Commission’s July meeting.

We are pleased to report that the Town is now collaborating with us to rectify the situation! Although it will take time and proper planning to remove the pipe, we are jointly working toward the best possible solution. Consequently, it is no longer necessary for our supporters to attend the Inland Wetlands Commission meeting this Thursday, July 11th.
